"Can’t say I don’t know how that feels." She admitted with a soft breath as they walked. "It’s nice just like I remember, are you sure you don’t me staying?"

"Well, I could cast you out for old times sake. Isn’t that how we first met after all?" Zuko joked lightly, remembering the less than welcome reception he had gained from Rose after accidentally falling into her world, "It’s no trouble. Really. Stay for as long as you like. I’ll arrange for a room for however extended your stay will be."

"That was comical, you trying to banish me." She laughed and took in the scenery all around them. "It’s nice here, glad to see this place is in good hands now."

"There will always be those whom blindly worship the mad and corrupt, hoping that their loyalties will be rewarded somehow." She said with a heavy sigh.

She slid her arm in his formally as they walked, “just stand by your convictions.”

"If only it were that simple," Zuko let out an annoyed breath and peered down at her. He had a rather extensive history with making questionable decisions and hoped that the changes he made was truly right for his county.

Zuko shook his head to disperse the negative thoughts of self-doubt and continued down the brightly lit halls until reaching the main hall. He halted their joined footsteps and waved over a guard in charge of manning the front entrance. “I’ll be heading out. Secure the doors until I return and let no one in under any circumstances.”

"But, sir-…," the guard immediately started to protest only to be silenced by a glare from the Fire Lord. The guard quickly corrected his actions and bowed respectfully, heading off to convey the message to the rest of the personnel.

"We’ve been having problems with break-ins," Zuko explained even though the number of intruders had greatly lessened now, "People out for my head."

"Can’t say I don’t know how that feels." She admitted with a soft breath as they walked. "It’s nice just like I remember, are you sure you don’t me staying?"

"Sounds lovely." She smiled and got to her feet, "it’s been a while since I got to tour this place, it looks like it’s changed since I last came." Rose gestured for him to follow her out.

The Fire Lord trailed after her and inwardly beamed at how she pointed out the improvements he had made during his reign. Zuko’s self-esteem had risen since he had taken the throne; although, he still struggled with making sure he stayed down the right path and not follow in his Father’s footsteps.

"You noticed," Zuko smiled while escorting Rose down the halls. "I’ve been working nonstop to bring this nation forward. We had become stuck with tradition and resistant to change. There needs to be a decent balance between the new and old. I like to think that my people are happier this way. Of course, we do have some resistant parties," he grimaced momentarily, "Those who remain loyal to the Fire Lord before me, for example."

"There will always be those whom blindly worship the mad and corrupt, hoping that their loyalties will be rewarded somehow." She said with a heavy sigh.

"All right, what would you like to—"

Sokka burst in beaming with his meat smoothie in hand, “I know what we can do, we can go to the local festival they’re holding tonight! You need some time off, right buddy?” He looked to Zuko cheekily, “and don’t worry I won’t let anyone start gossiping about the Fire Lord and his friend.”

Zuko pinched the bridge of his nose at Sokka’s abrupt arrival and let out a steamed breath. He should have expected for him to eavesdrop on their conversation. “Something tells me that if anyone is going to be gossiping then, it’s going to be you.”

Zuko turned his attention back to Rose then, “I can’t believe I’m saying this but, Sokka does have a point. Our festivals here are nice.”

"Sounds lovely." She smiled and got to her feet, "it’s been a while since I got to tour this place, it looks like it’s changed since I last came." Rose gestured for him to follow her out.

Well, Zuko tried his best. He had admitted before that he wasn’t the best with advice where family was concerned. “Nonsense,” he tapped his temple and referred to his Phoenix King alternate, “He keeps chastising me - saying that I work too hard. It’s about time that I take a break and you’ve just given me the best opportunity.”

"This area right here ought to be renamed my bedroom with how many nights I’ve spent here already," he joked before his crooked smile well, "Besides, you shouldn’t have to spend this time alone unless that’s what you want."

"All right, what would you like to—"

"I can’t talk to him, I’ve tried and it always leads to an argument. And the boys, well I don’t want to burden them with our marital issues." She sighed and went to sit. "I wasn’t ready to return home when I did, ultimately I decided to leave which is why I’m here."

"You’re more than welcome to stay here for as long as you like," Zuko smiled comfortingly and took a seat by his desk. Instead of focusing back on his work, however, he attended to Rose’s needs. He intended to help with whatever his friend needed him for.

"You said that you can’t talk to him. How about talking with him instead? If you close yourself off beforehand then of course it’s going to lead to an argument,” his first few years of exile were a prime example of that. He had been too angry and hellbent on regaining his honor to listen to anyone.

"If I could talk at all with him I would, but frankly I have nothing to say to him." She sighed and rubbed her temples, "thank you, I promise you won’t notice I’m here."

She was trying to act as though nothing was wrong but her friend had seen through her weak mask. “We don’t talk and when we do we’re fighting or dismissive— I don’t talk to him.” She corrected and continued, “he lied to me, and I’m not sure how to salvage our marriage. My youngest son says he’s a bad father and the oldest doesn’t talk to either of us. I’m not sure what to do.”

"I’m, ah, not exactly the most ideal person to turn to where resolving family issues are concerned," he admitted while rubbing the back of his neck, "I’m not sure at what I can offer for advice other than my support." Zuko was the leader of his country but, his own family was completely broken aside from his relationship with his Uncle. His Father was imprisoned and Azula had been locked up in the mental ward.

"The question is why you’re not talking with him and, by extension, your sons. What else happened other than his faked death?"

"I can’t talk to him, I’ve tried and it always leads to an argument. And the boys, well I don’t want to burden them with our marital issues." She sighed and went to sit. "I wasn’t ready to return home when I did, ultimately I decided to leave which is why I’m here."

"No need." She said fondly and turned to silently hint for Sokka to leave them, the subtly went unnoticed by the non-bender.

”Can you give us a minute to talk?” Rose asked and watched Sokka walk off going in search of her TARDIS for a meat smoothie.

"I’m good, turns out my husband isn’t dead." But she wasn’t fine, far from it.

Well, that came off as a surprise and it made his past reveal of his little crush on her all the more awkward. It wasn’t of much importance, however, after Zuko finally noticed Rose’s demeanor. He tilted his head back towards his study and was soon accompanied by an inviting gesture of his arm.

"Join me?" Zuko held open the door for his dear friend, "It’s one of the more private rooms in the Palace. Quiet too. Which is a bit annoying for those long work-nights." His good brow raised then as he voiced his concerns, "Are you sure that you’re alright? It doesn’t look like you are. Is your husband well?" He wondered if the man he had yet to meet had fallen under unfortunate circumstances. After all, if he hadn’t been dead like everyone assumed then what had happened to him?

Rose strolled over to the Fire Lord, “it’s been far too long, I hope you haven’t forgotten about me since you encountered my alter ego.” She grinned and pulled him into a hug, but her eyes didn’t entirely convey her joy.

"How have you been?"

image

"Exhausted but well," Zuko replied upon pulling away from the embrace. Rose’s hidden unhappiness went unnoticed by the Fire Lord in his tired state and instantly shot a glare towards Sokka. The mention of their encounter with Rose in her alternate form brought back some unsavory memories.

"I apologize again for Sokka’s antics and bombarding you with all that information," Zuko shifted on his feet awkwardly then, adding, "And, uh, for what I said as well. It doesn’t change anything between us."

"How have you been faring?"

It felt like a long time since Rose had gone to see her old friend Zuko, now seemed like the right time. She walked along curiously taking in the elegant halls as she passed them trying to avoid any confrontation with the guards.

Finding Zuko in the labyrinth of the palace proved difficult without being caught, and ultimately she was by the non-bender roaming the halls.

"Hey you’re back!" He exclaimed happily.

Fire Lord Zuko glanced up from his work after yet another long night of working in his study. His curiosity was quickly piqued by Sokka’s exclamation and rose to his feet, rubbing the back of his sore neck. It was tedious work bringing his nation back to the glory it once held before the War. The schools now had access to historically accurate information and it was a wonderful start to his country’s reform. Educating the youth of today would hopefully prevent another War from breaking out and another hundred years of pain.

Zuko exited the closed off room and his gaze immediately full upon Sokka. “Who are you talking to?” But, as soon as the question left his lips, it was immediately answered after noticing Rose’s surprising presence. It seemed like forever since he had seen her in that form.

image

"Oh," a crooked smile crossed Zuko’s lips as he approached the pair, "Welcome back."

Rose strolled over to the Fire Lord, “it’s been far too long, I hope you haven’t forgotten about me since you encountered my alter ego.” She grinned and pulled him into a hug, but her eyes didn’t entirely convey her joy.

I think my RP posts have devolved into one sentence rubbish, I’m far too busy, and can’t relax which is causing my stress headaches 24/7, and my main character’s marriage is falling apart.

I’m wondering why I haven’t taken a hiatus yet.
